The Accidental Husband has nothing to offer. The writing is ridiculous, the dialogues are worn-out before they are even uttered, and the conflicts are uninspired and clichéd. Sometimes, the cream-of-the-crop actors tend to save an otherwise mediocre film (remember Sex and the City?). But nothing is as bad as Uma Thurman and Colin Firth acting like B-movie actors in a flick so substandard, it's embarrassing for both them and the viewers.
What Is the Movie About?
Thurman plays Dr. Emma Lloyd, a radio talk-show host who specializes in giving pragmatic relationship advice. One day she tells a girl named Sophia that she should break up with her fiancé Patrick (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Sophia promptly does this, leaving Patrick heart-broken. Impulsively, he has the neighbor kid hack into public records and make it appear as if he is married to Emma, who is now unable to get hitched to her dream fiancé Richard (Firth).
If the premise sounds funny, one should know that it is not. The story goes from stupid to insane, with scenes that are completely random. A kid hacks into public records. Uma Thurman gets drunk. Colin Firth walks around aimlessly. Isabella Rosellini makes an appearance. There is even a Bollywood-style party. The Accidental Husband is a movie that does not know where it is heading, who its characters are and why it exists in the first place.
Thurman, Firth and Morgan.
The only actor worth mentioning is Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He is the least-known lead in the film, previously starring in TV shows such as Weeds, Supernatural and Grey's Anatomy, as well as in the movies P.S. I Love You and Watchmen. He is quite right for the role of Patrick, the kind-hearted fireman. Colin Firth is given literally nothing to do. The only thing we ever learn about his character is that he eats chocolate compulsively. Finally, Uma Thurman should be ashamed of this flick. She is an amazing actress, but it is impossible to guess what she must have been thinking, making this movie. Her comic timing has never been worse and it was hard to link the star of The Accidental Husband to the one of Pulp Fiction.
There are great romantic comedies (Love Actually, You've Got Mail), and then there is The Accidental Husband. It is a movie made solely for the purpose of making money. If one wants to sacrifice the cost or renting this DVD in exchange for the few somewhat-amusing moments this movie offers, fine. But others may want to pick out a romantic comedy that is actually romantic and funny.
